Hi WP File Download support team,

I'm considering your plugin for a client project and wanted to confirm if it would meet our specific requirements.

My client runs an informational website for the farming industry with numerous blog posts and PDF resources. Currently, all content is publicly accessible, but we need to implement the following changes:

1. Restrict PDF access to logged-in users only (while keeping all other pages/posts freely accessible)
2. Force users to log in when attempting to access any PDF file
3. Prevent direct URL access to PDFs for non-logged-in users
4. Support for custom user registration fields. I plan on using the free Profile Builder plugin to add 2 or 3 custom user fields so that we have a bit more data on registered users on the website (2-3 simple fields like "Field of Work" and "Position in company", etc).
5. Track detailed statistics on PDF views, including:
- Which users viewed which PDFs
- View counts by industry/field of work
- Individual user viewing patterns and frequency

Does WP File Download provide these capabilities out-of-the-box? If not, are there any specific extensions or complementary plugins you recommend to achieve our goals?

Kind regards,
Iwan

Hi,

Thanks for contacting us here about this extension.

1. Restrict PDF access to logged-in users only (while keeping all other pages/posts freely accessible)

Yes, you can restrict file downloads to specific user roles on the frontend. Please go here for further information:

https://www.joomunited.com/wordpress-documentation/wp-file-download/666-file-access-and-management-limitation

2. Force users to log in when attempting to access any PDF file

For PDF access, users will need to log in before previewing or downloading files. Just note that we don't have a built-in login form on the file page itself.

3. Prevent direct URL access to PDFs for non-logged-in users

Users cannot download files via direct link without proper permissions, even if they know the exact URL.

4. Support for custom user registration fields. I plan on using the free Profile Builder plugin to add 2 or 3 custom user fields so that we have a bit more data on registered users on the website (2-3 simple fields like "Field of Work" and "Position in company", etc).

Custom user registration fields aren't part of our plugin.

5. Track detailed statistics on PDF views, including:
- Which users viewed which PDFs
- View counts by industry/field of work
- Individual user viewing patterns and frequency

For PDF view statistics, we offer basic download tracking. You can find more detailed information about our statistics feature in our documentation at the link provided.
